First Annual IDMI Advisory Board Meeting

October 16 and 17, 2016 marked the first gathering of the Advisory Board Members of the Institute for Design and Manufacturing Innovation (IDMI).  Highly regarded individuals from multiple disciplines around the country met for a casual, informal reception at The Deck on Laguna in Laguna Beach, California.

Evening weather was perfect and conversation was lively as newly appointed Board Members relaxed and became acquainted, discussing their backgrounds and visions for the recently created Institute for Design and Manufacturing Innovation in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering.  UCI’s Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering, Gregory Washington and IDMI Director, Professor Lorenzo Valdevit hosted the evening.  All agreed that it was an excellent meet-and-greet as everyone eagerly anticipated the first Board Meeting.

The following morning it was all business at UCI, as IDMI Advisory Board Chairman, Dr. Diran Apelian, facilitated the all-day meeting with Board Members, IDMI faculty and UCI Administration.  An intense day of discussion of strategy, objectives and suggestions ensued regarding the direction and goals of the IDMI.

So many unique perspectives and varied points of view created a momentum of excitement around what IDMI could accomplish in reshaping the future of manufacturing through a synergistic integration of research, education and outreach. “We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of such an extraordinarily talented group of manufacturing leaders. They are literally the who-is-who in manufacturing in this country!! This was an incredibly important day for IDMI and we look forward to continuing to engage our advisors as we move forward,” said IDMI Director Lorenzo Valdevit.   Look for exciting advances from IDMI.
